I took these back during the summer. I had seen some other pictures of the place and did some research. I had no idea that this place even existed and I was born and raised here in SC (upstate). I got up one morning and made the drive down to go try to see what I could come up with. Nothing really special I suppose since the place has been photographed in every way shape or form over the years. I was pretty pleased with how they turned out but would be interested in other's opinions, C&C welcomed.

This one is probably my favorite of the bunch:

I love the theme. This is exactly the kind of thing the Culture and History category is for.

Two things...

I really like the dreamy look of the first and last photo in the two posts you submitted. How did you do that, was it post processing in PS or some setting or technique with your camera? Both of those photos have an ethereal feel to them which works really nicely since the subject is the remains of a church.

Where is Sheldon? Can you give me a little bit more on the location, maybe a larger city it is near. Coastal, mountains, or piedmont?

Nice series and very interesting post.

Joe,

That is from post processing. It's called the Orton effect. It doesn't work on everything you have to try it and play around with it a bit to get it to work. I'd be happy to walk you through it and anyone else that might be interested but I must give credit where credit is due. I picked it up from Detoff who I invited to join us here.

Sheldon Church is near Yemassee, SC and/or Beaufort, SC in the low state.

Here's a link to some information on the place:

Joe you should definitely go check it out. It's a really neat place.

Scott,

You did a great job getting shots this nice, I've been to Old Sheldon Church at least 5-6 times (slide film days) but always with bad light. I never seem to capture the beauty of the grounds and ruins like you have here. I especially like the shot from the gate, really cool.

I looked up the Orton effect on the web, that's so interesting how that is applied. I think I'll give it a go sometimes when I have time. Thanks for the info.

Beautiful series, Scott. I really like the processing on these. The first and last images are the nicest to my eye.

Thanks Butch!

This place is a real challenge to shoot early. I almost think it would be better to photograph late in the afternoon(s).

What a great series. I really like the last shot with the arches framed by the trees and the close up with the fern. Kinda shows how nature takes everything back in the end.

Just viewing again. I think I like the first one the best now.
