This young Reddish Egret let its guard down enough to allow me to crawl closer. The younger Reddish act much more nervous when not accompanied by adult birds, at least in my experience. Had I not been laying down this bird would never have strolled in my direction, I'm fairly certain of that.

Steve,
These are very nice, you really had the light to capture detail in the bird. I don't think I've seen an immature reddish egret in person, the adults many times but not the younger birds. I think my favorite is #4.
Thanks for sharing, great job.

Thanks very much Robert, it was a great morning and this youngster made it even better. I've run across the young birds in the past but always along with an adult bird. This year I came across a pair of juvis on a couple occasions(same pair I believe) and solo youngsters as well. I pay close attention to bill markings to try and distinguish the juvis as well as the adults. I hope this season was an indication of increasing reproductive activity and that the younger birds are extending their travel north in larger numbers.

I like the second photo because you can see more of the feather detail since the feathers are fluffed a bit.
I will also note that photos #1 and #2 are good at demonstrating the focal plane. You can get a real sense of the depth of field by looking at the blurred water in front of the bird and the blurred water behind the bird.

Thanks much Joe. I'm partial to #2 as well.

All are awesome shots. #2 is my favorite I think. #4 was right there with those little drips coming off the foot. But the nice background and detail in 2's fluffed feathers just nudge it ahead of the others.
