went to benezette this weekend to shoot some pics of the elk but mother nature was making it real hard to get out of the truck.
met dizzy's friend (elmer sweitzer) up there on saturday but all we did was put miles on and talk. i could talk to the guy all day long.

Neat stuff Jason!

I gotta get up there! I talk about it every year but never go! Glad you got to see Elmer!

Bet your still waiting for those "Owl CD's". I have them in my vehicle and just keep forgetting to get to the post office and the worst thing was I was going to give to Elmer to bring to you and completely forgot as well. I think I'm looing my short term memory.

If you are around this kind of action, then you need to keep going back throughout the rest of the rutting season. Very fun. The elk bulge call is cool in three of the images (at least I assume he is sounding). The only thing I would nitpick about is the chopped off legs, that's kind of a no-no. If the legs were covered with vegetation that's one thing, but to be chopped off at the bottom of the frame is another. So ... I like the images ... just wish the legs weren't chopped off. My two cents (for whatever that is worth).

Don't feel bad. I just posted a flower in the flora section with the same situation. In this case I have a stem cut off instead of legs cut off. But it's the same idea. I'm trying to figure out a way to mitigate the cut off stem in post processing. Not sure I did a real good job either.

PS, I've got plenty, I mean plenty of animals with the legs cut off in the frame. You are not alone.

A good rule of thumb would be ... if you don't have all the animal or if you want to crop for a closer look, think about a family portrait. The studio photographer doesn't cut your families legs off when he shows you the image, he has taken (or cropped) the photo at waist high. So your body is chopped off, but the legs aren't.

Not sure I am making sense.

Limbs look stranger cut in half than chests or the body. If you cropping or are framing tight, it looks better to not show any of the limbs, than to show partial limbs chopped off.

Sounds like you had fun. They're awesome animals to see.

Speaking of CDs I just got the "Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs Eastern Region." I figured I could "rip" it to my MP3 player but am a little taken back by the human voice announcing the name of the bird on each track. Wasn't expecting that.

BirdJam makes software to strip that voice off and to split each bird species into individual songs. In addition they add pictures for each bird. I've got it and it works well. You just have to follow the instructions. Only downside is the software is a little expensive.

Or you can just go here and download the different sounds the way I do! All for free and already separate!

But then again, think of all the hundreds of magazine cover shots every year where the legs are chopped off of whitetail deer. Legs chopped off, yet that's the money shot nonetheless. Gotta shoot for the market, right?

You may have a point there Tom. I definitely don't have any inside scoop on the magazine business. Maybe I need to look at more periodicals to see what they are doing.
