I hit the water early yesterday morning. Daylight was just starting to make an appearance. As I crossed between the main islands, Town Marsh and Carrot Island, I took a few shots of the rising sun. Canon 40D, Sigma 50-500mm @ 50, handheld from the kayak.

Nice shot. Great sunbeams. I see a dust spot on one of the clouds - dont you hate them? Are you using a VR or IS lens? Just curious since it was shot from a Kayak and it is sharp.

Dust spot! What dust spot? ;) Can't believe I missed that one. It was an easy fix and quick edit. I've gotta do a sensor cleaning for sure.
No VR/IS/OS. It's all a matter of technique and choosing the right shutter speeds. That said, I'd love to have a stabilized lens. Now if I could just hit that lottery. :)

Nice Capture Bob! I love the golden tone on this one!
I'm going to make a comment here, but it's a general statement and not aimed directly at you! :D
This is where Zooms Suck, especially the ones with such a mixture of distance modes and focal length. (Even my 100-400L sucks at this) Another reason for keeping that spread in mm's down. Don't take me wrong here! Not all Zooms totally suck and some of Canon's and Nikon's are top dogs for landscape photography.
Looking at your Exif, that foreground should have been popping but it's either OOF from the lens or shake. Actually using f22 may have been a hamper as well at a focal length of 50mm. A 50mm prime and f11 would have been the ticket on this one most likely, perhaps f16 at the maximum.
All in all it's a lovely scene and with a little selective sharpening on the foreground it will look great.
Your 50-500 has done you good on the majority of your shooting. For the next critical landscape, slip on a shorter spread in mm Zoom or better yet a small prime.

Wonderful clouds, love the sunbeams, and the water has some really nice texture and lighting to it. It a very good image. The blownout (pure white) areas in the sky where the sun is might be pushing it, I don't think you'd want any more than what you have here for sure. I would love to have this image as my own.

Bob, that is a great capture . I bet it is something to be in a kayak and see the day unfold with such beauty in the sky .
